Interdisciplinary Instrumentation Colloquium: Instrumentation Issues in Cancer Biology - Problems and Opportunities
Speaker: Joe Gray, Life Sciences Division, LBNL & UCSF Cancer Center
Date: Wednesday, February 1, 2006
Time: 4:00 PM sharp (refreshments at 3:45)
Place: LBNL, Building 50 Auditorium
The worldwide anti-cancer effort has revealed an astonishing number the molecular and biological abnormalities that are associated with cancer initiation, progression and response to treatment. Not surprisingly, the exact set of abnormalities varies between cancers, even between cancers that appear identical clinically. The aggressiveness of each tumor and its response to therapy is determined by the exact set of abnormalities. Future cancer management will require that these abnormalities be assessed in every cancer patient. Currently, technologies are being developed that may allow complete DNA sequencing of individual tumors, analysis of the expression levels of millions of different transcripts and tens of thousands of proteins. This talk will cover provide an overview of important molecular features of cancer, review some strategies that are being developed now to assess their cellular and molecular features and suggest areas where improvements are needed.
