New developments will reshape the way electron scattering is utilized to investigate the structure and chemical composition of materials. We anticipate that electron microscopes will have the ability to image single atoms of most elements in the periodic table and furthermore tie the spatial information to spectroscopy, which probes for chemical constituents and local bonding. Therefore, a three-dimensional materials characterization can reach towards atomic resolution. Then it will be feasible to solve the long-standing problem of information loss that comes from projecting the three- dimensional materials structure into a two-dimensional image. This talk highlights how much materials science already benefits from recent advancements in instrumentation. Applications will be discussed that illustrate current capabilities, but also point to limitations that will be removed by the next generation of microscopes. Developments are underway in the DoE’s TEAM-Project (http://ncem.lbl.gov/team3.htm) and will come to fruition in 2007.
