Much of what happens at Berkeley Lab relies on directly (or indirectly) imaging objects or phenomena to deduce structure, dynamics, or surprises. Considerable effort is often put into how we “illuminate” the subject (synchrotron light sources, large colliders), but we sometimes forget about the importance of the camera. The venerable charge-coupled detector (CCD), for example, is used on sub-nuclear to cosmological length scales.
This talk will focus on solid state imagers, with an emphasis on monolithic detectors. Technological constraints (and possibilities) will be described, along with several current LBNL activities.
