Special Safety Talk: "Safety and Innovation at DuPont."

The following message was sent on behalf of Director Chu; all employees, especially PIs, are encouraged to attend:

I write to remind you that Dr. Thomas Connelly of DuPont has been invited to the Lab to share with us how DuPont incorporates safety into its research and innovation culture. As we agreed at DDM, Division Directors should ensure their Divisional employees are aware of the talk; PIs especially should make every effort to attend.

Dr. Connelly will speak on Monday, September 25. Below is  his biography as well as DuPont's safety record.

The details of Dr. Connelly's talk are:

Speaker:     Thomas M. Connelly, Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer, DuPont

Title:             "Safety and Innovation at DuPont"

Date:            Monday, September 25, 2006

Time:            12 noon-1:00 p.m.

Location:      Bldg. 50 Auditorium

Why You Should Attend: Over the past year, some Lab employees have said that they don't understand how research productivity and safety can both be accomplished within time and budget constraints. This is a chance to hear a different point of view, that the two can be incorporated successfully.

DuPont's Safety Record: DuPont has a long history of putting safety first and is generally recognized as an industry leader in safety.  The most recent recognition came this year when the National Safety Council awarded its 2006 Green Cross for Safety Medal to DuPont.  According to the U.S. Bureau of labor, DuPont has a workplace safety record 11 times better than the nation's industrial average.

DuPont believes that all injuries and occupational illnesses, as well as safety and environmental incidents, are preventable, and our goal for all of them is zero.  In the last five years DuPont's injury rate is statistically better than the previous year.  This year the lost time injury rate (0.126 lost-time injuries per 200,000 exposure hours) is 50% lower than it was last year.
