Description
- The exponential increase in electronic circuit density, fueled by
significant R&D in materials, processes and techniques, has resulted in tremendous spin-off value for scientific instrumentation. As detection volumes shrink from mm or cm 1-D length scales to µm 2-D (and even 3-D) scales, a corresponding increase in readout electronics density is required. The solution is generally a custom integrated circuit (IC), designed for a specific instrumentation application. Because ICs have significant up-front fabrication costs, and are not repairable (no user-serviceable parts inside), IC design is a detailed and meticulous process.
LBNL initiated its custom IC design program two decades ago and continues to be the DOE Office of Science leader in the design of custom integrated circuits for sophisticated instrumentation. This talk will go through the steps of the IC design process, and discuss some of the challenges we face in IC design with changing technology. Current activities will also be showcased, as well as examples of how LBNL-designed chips can serve emerging instrumentation needs.
