Combined Engineering and CBP Seminar:
Title: "Applications with Intense OTR Images: Microbunched Beams"
Speaker: Dr. Alex H. Lumpkin - Fermilab
Date: Friday, May 9, 2008
Time: 10:30 a.m. - Noon
Location: Bldg. 2, Room 100B
Abstract: A review of z-dependent diagnostics experiments on a Vis-VUV self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL) will be presented. These experiments at APS/ANL showed that coherent optical transition radiation (COTR)could be used to track the evolution of SASE-induced microbunching. Such measurements should also be relevant to proposed SASE experiments when driven by LWFA beams. In addition, the possibility of detecting enhanced OTR from the laser wakefield accelerator initial beam will be addressed.
BIO: Alex Lumpkin has been involved with time-resolved imaging of particle and photon beams for FELs and light sources for over two decades. He has participated in FEL experiments at Los Alamos, Boeing, Duke, and ANL and helped to commission the Advanced Photon Source particle beam diagnostics systems and accelerators. He is a 2006 elected Fellow of the American Physical Society, and he is currently a Guest Scientist at Fermilab.
