Introducing the Engineering Division’s new logo

This November, the Engineering Division launched its brand-new logo. The new logo — a “dynamic E” — will help the Division distinguish itself both within the Lab and externally. The logo is now available for use by Division employees.

“I am excited that we can launch our new logo to communicate the Engineering Division as a unique area as well as promote our extensive capabilities within the lab.,” says Daniela Leitner, Engineering Division Director. “We should all feel proud of our Division and the work we do.”

The Division’s new logo is an abstract representation of the letter “E” for Engineering, intended to capture many different types of engineering practiced across the Lab. Its design alludes to various engineering disciplines and capabilities within the Division, evoking the imagery of circuit boards, accelerator beams, and magnetic forces. The layered structure reflects the iterative and interconnected nature of engineering processes and team science, where each phase builds upon the last to create a final product that is greater than the sum of its parts. It points forward and upward, dynamically signaling progress and scientific advancement.

The logo was created by Eduardo de Ugarte, a Senior Graphic Designer in IT’s Creative Services Office, who has created visual identities for many areas across LBNL, including designing the ALS and the Physical Sciences Area logos.

As part of the design process, de Ugarte met with Division leadership and did research into the Division’s work and the role the Engineering plays within the larger Lab context.

“It’s a challenge to capture someone’s life’s work in one visual symbol or icon,” de Ugarte says. “My goal was to develop an identity that was timeless and honored the full range of priorities and fields of expertise within Engineering, and fit into the Physical Sciences Area and broader LBNL brand.”

The logo creation was an iterative process, with multiple directions presented and multiple rounds of feedback incorporated to arrive at the final design.

The logo is available for use by Engineering Division staff. There are a number of different versions, depending on the application. For example, for external presentations, there is a version that incorporates both the overarching Berkeley Lab logo and the Engineering Division logo.
