Berkeley Lab mechanical engineer Nick Wenner introduces Iris, a prototype fiber-positioning robot for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) upgrade. DESI uses tiny, precisely positioned robots to measure how the universe has expanded over time and reveal the mysteries of dark energy. Spec-S5 will scale DESI up from 5,000 to 25,000 robots, and the additional data will help scientists answer key questions about the universe, dark matter, and cosmic evolution.
