Experienced Engineering Division staff provide cross-functional support across Berkeley Lab to large-scale scientific projects with specialized software, systems, and applications. These tools provide an essential framework for managing projects of all sizes, including document and configuration management and industry-standard CMII change control.

Our catalog spans a wide range of software applications and layers of customization to shepherd controlled data through their service life. The team maintains and provides computing resources, backups, large-format printing, network file storage and sharing, remote computation servers, account management, and cloud services. All of our services run atop a virtual cloud infrastructure to facilitate site-wide and remote access. In addition, the Engineering Division’s Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Department provides numerous training courses and tutorials on the use of these engineering tools and their processes.

The Engineering Division has expertise in selecting, managing, and supporting a range of specialized tools used in the development of scientific instrumentation and infrastructure. Support includes training and best practices, template setup, standards development and validation, integration with engineering systems, and custom tool development.

The Engineering Division develops and maintains an industry-standard Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system to manage engineering records and project documentation. The system provides a controlled environment for the generation of CAD models, drawings, and project documentation throughout their service lifecycle.

The CAD team manages quality assurance toolsets and workflows for CAD and project documentation and works closely with the dedicated Quality Assurance team out of the Manufacturing Engineering Department. This comprehensive program ensures that every single object created at Berkeley Lab is of high quality and follows best practices. The goal of this initiative is to establish and maintain a high standard for engineering data across all projects and programs. Additionally, the team provides a Drawing Validation service to interested projects to ensure adherence to published LBNL drawing standards and compliance with industry standards and expectations.
