Berkeley Lab’s tradition and culture of team science fosters a highly complementary and integrated link between scientific experts and engineering professionals skilled in transitioning novel ideas into complex experimental instruments. Berkeley Lab Engineers pride themselves on their understanding and investment in achieving the larger scientific goals and mission of the Lab.

The Division’s multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists provide comprehensive technical support and management for scientific projects, guiding them from initial conceptualization to successful execution and completion.

The Division’s systems engineers are experts at cascading detailed technical requirements from the high-level scientific objectives of an experiment, defining interfaces between deliverables from different groups, and ensuring ultimate science performance through the verification and validation process. Throughout the project lifecycle, we manage requirements, interfaces, performance budgets, and configuration management to ensure seamless integration. We align with DOE Project Management practices, enabling the delivery of the Laboratory’s most ambitious projects, from large accelerator facilities to miniature detector assemblies.

The Engineering Division has a team of experienced project management experts and technical control account managers (CAMs) skilled in navigating all lifecycle phases for scientific efforts of any size. The Engineering Division’s project managers are experienced in DOE 413.3B Order requirements for project execution and are commonly Project Management Institute certified. At the Lab, project management tools and processes are  tailored to the individual needs and requirements of each project or research effort.
