The engineering and technical staff are a critical resource for Berkeley Lab, helping scientists conceive, design, and build the unique instrumentation necessary for world-class research and helping user facilities maintain and expand their capabilities. Expertise within the Lab is organized into six primary engineering disciplines: Computer-Aided Design (CAD); Electronics, Software, and Instrumentation; Manufacturing Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; and Project Planning and Controls.

Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

The Engineering CAD Department designs, develops, and manages integrated engineering data systems and software applications that enable the full lifecycle management of scientific components and support engineering workflows.

Electronics, Software, and Instrumentation Engineering

The Electronics, Software, and Instrumentation Engineering (ESIE) Department focuses on the electrical and software engineering aspects of the accelerator and detector lifecycle, from research and development to operations.

Manufacturing Engineering

The Manufacturing Engineering Department provides a broad range of fabrication capabilities and manufacturing engineering support—on demand and with exceptional precision—to bring science to life.

Mechanical Engineering

The Mechanical Engineering Department has deep expertise in requirements management, design, manufacturing, technical assembly, commissioning, and operation of scientific instrumentation, particularly in areas that are novel or one-of-a-kind.

Planning and Project Controls

The Project Controls Engineering Department supports complex scientific and infrastructure projects at Berkeley Lab by integrating cost, schedule, and scope management. It specializes in deploying the Lab’s earned value management system (EVMS), ensuring that complex projects across Berkeley Lab have the most accurate performance measurement baseline from which to measure both cost and schedule performance.
